Eye Safety and First Aid for Kids

Things to do
• See the doctor if your child gets hit hard on the eye
• Make sure that your child wears protective eyeglasses or helmets with gloves while paying contact sports such as cricket and hockey
• Select toys: without any pointy edges and toys that shoot objects in the air
• Safety proof your house by putting gates at stairs, padding sharp edges of furniture and putting locks on cabinet drawers

Avoid
• Allowing your child near fireworks
• Allowing your child to gaze into the sun directly

First Aid for eye injuries

When dust particles settle in the eye:
• Do not allow your child to rub the eye
• Lift the upper eyelid and flush your child’s eye with clean water
• If the particle does not dislodge gently cover the eye without applying pressure and see an eye specialist immediately
Scratched cornea

Causes behind scratched cornea:
• Scratching by a fingernail
• Rubbing the eye when a foreign object is present
• Getting poked by a sharp object

First Aid for scratched cornea

Avoid:
• Allowing your child to rub the eyes
• Flushing the eyes with water or using any ointments

Do’s:
• Gently cover the eyes
• See an eye specialist
• Tilt the head to the side of the affected eye and flush the eyes with clean water repeatedly from a glass of water
• Take your child to an eye specialist with the chemical product if possible
• Apply ice packet gently to the eye (in case of swelling)
• Give a dose of paracetamol (if in pain)
• Have the eye evaluated by an eye specialist for any internal injury
