VERY EASY crochet jester / square hat tutorial – all baby / child’s sizes

This video is a detailed step by step tutorial on how to crochet a square / jester baby or child’s hat. This pattern is suitable for beginners.

For my hat I used Drops Big Merino yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.

For 0-3 months chain 20- repeat row 2, 6 more times

For 3-6 months chain 22, repeat row 2, 7 more times

For 6-12 months chain 24 – repeat row 2, 7 more times

For 1-2 years chain 26 (shown in video) – repeat row 2, 8 more times

For 2-3 years chain 30 – repeat row 2, 8 more times

For 3-4 years chain 32 – repeat row 2, 9 more times

For 4-5 years chain 34 – repeat row 2, 9 more times

For 5-6 years chain 36 – repeat row 2, 10 more times

For 6 years+ chain 36 – repeat row 2, 10 more times

Materials Required

1 skein/ball of Red Heart With Love Yarn, Color: Caramel. (Medium worsted weight – category 4.)

You will get 2-3 Crochet Beanie Hats from 1 skein/ball.

6.5mm Crochet Hook

Notes: ch 2 = 1 dc st.

Making the Crown (top of beanie)

ch 5, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring. (5 sts)

Rnd 1: ch 2, (working over yarn tail) 15 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-2. (16 sts)

Rnd 2: ch 2, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st, rep from * around to last st, 2 dc into last st, sl st into top of ch-2. (24 sts)

Rnd 3: ch 2, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts, rep from * around to the last 2 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st, sl st into top of ch-2. (32 sts)

Rnd 4: ch 2, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts, rep from * around to the last 3 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (40 sts)

Rnd 5: ch 2, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts, rep from * around to the last 4 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of the next 3 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (48 sts)

Rnd 6: ch 2, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 5 sts, rep from * around to the last 5 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of the next 4 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (56 sts)

Making the Sides

Rnds 7 to 14: ch 2, 1 BPdc around post of each dc st to the end, sl st into top of ch-2. (At the end of each of these rounds you will have 56 sts.)

Making the Edge

Rnd 15: 1 sl st into each st around to the end.

Finish off and weave in yarn tails with a yarn needle.
