How To Organize Your Home, Part 2: Organizing A Small Entryway Or Hall Closet

In this second installment in our How To Organize Your Home series, I take you on a tour of my tiny entryway closet and show how I organize it so that it is efficient and useful for our family of seven.

When we bought our new house, we were disappointed to see just how small and poorly designed the entryway closet was. There really wasn’t space to even put coats, much less anything else, so I redesigned the entryway and closet to make it much more useful for our family.

Some people recommend more elaborate processes, but I have 5 kids and some parts of those systems, no matter how brilliant they seem to adults, completely break down with real kids in real families. Of course, you may have your own system that works for you, but here is how I organize my entryway hall closet. Hopefully you will get a few good ideas you can use!

Our last video was a tour of the entryway itself and if you missed that one, you can see it here:

Here are some of the main points in this video:

0:49 I don’t believe in making kids put coats on coat hangers because it requires extra steps and no matter how much you hound them, they just won’t do it. So why make it difficult on yourself? Instead, develop a more efficient system.

1:11 I showed you in our previous video about how to make a more kid friendly coat hanger for all of our coats in our entryway.

1:24 I use the coat closet for all the extra little things.

1:28 Vacuum and accessories

1:45 A little vacuum that we use for the stairs to make it easier for the kids to do their chores.

2:08 I’m going to run through here and show you where everything is.

2:11 I keep all of my extra hats, gloves and things in this plastic zipper bag that came with a sheet set. It keeps everything clean and organized. In the winter, I often keep this in the car so we have extra hats and gloves available at all times.

3:05 I have these extra hats. To make storage simpler, I put all of the hats inside one of the other hats so they’re all stored in a nice neat package.

3:33 I draped the scarves over the coat rod, which in this closet is poorly designed for coats anyway.

3:43 This is our swimming bag, with all of our swimming gear easy to grab and go.

4:00 These are my other bags if I need something to grab when we’re going to the mountains or somewhere where I need to bring a lot of little things.

4:22 Over here, I have all of our umbrellas. I just used a nail – no fancy hooks, but they’re nicely organized and easy to grab when we need them.

5:00 In the back corner, we have my daughter’s bow and arrows.

5:07 Here, I have more scarves in another comforter bag.

5:34 This is my favorite part of the whole thing. This is a shoe holder, but we use it to store all of our gloves, along with a couple of hats and rain ponchos. This works really well for organizing all of the kids. It is see through, so we can see whose gloves are where.

7:00 If you have a smaller family, or if you live in a warmer climate, put your flip flops, sunscreen or other small items you’d like to have easily accessible in here.

7:45 This works for us. You may have a different family size or different family needs, so do some experimenting and see what works for you. And by all means, if you saw something here that might help you, be sure to integrate it into your closet organization system!

7:54 Tell me in the comments how you organize your coat closet to keep everything running smoothly without a huge mess.
