Alpaca is a variety of the Camelid species and very close to Llamas. It is confined mostly to the Andes Mountains in Peru, South America. They live only in that specific climatic condition making them exotic. For thousands of years, they are highly valued for their unique and superior quality wool and have been sold at very high prices. In recent times, the quality and lifespan of luxurious alpaca clothing has been widely recognized and has led to its popularity in spite of the high prices.

The high quality of the alpaca fibres is due to the minute air pockets in these fibre strands making them wonderfully warm fabric. They have high insulation property and are thus used in winter clothing. The fabric made from this is delicate and light weight and thus can also be used in hot weather climates to make soft clothing with air flow provided by the air pockets.

Alpaca sheep’s do not incorporate lanolin into the wool and thus the yarn does not have to undergo strenuous processing like sheep wool. Lanolin is also an irritant and is allergenic. This is the reason why the hypoallergenic alpaca yarn is now being used for producing baby alpaca clothing. They can be used for a longer time unlike wool which usually has to be replaced every year. Alpaca clothing is non-static and is not easily damaged by detergents or water.

Different body segment of the Alpaca Sheep produces different quality wool. The top portion is the best quality and mostly goes into the production of blanket. Then comes the neck and belly area, usually known as seconds and goes into the manufacture of socks, hats and scarves. The very coarse fibres from the legs are used not used in apparels and are processed into rugs, mats etc. They are also extensively classified based on the amount of processing required to remove any debris. Grade A usually is very less processed as it is free of sand, or any debris. The low grades ones are usually not used for cloth production as the quality of the alpaca products are always maintained.
